Architecture – design – challenges linking the old and the new
The team of architects led by Jürgen Mayer H. was selected in an international competition judged by a diverse panel of stakeholders. Ethical standards and social integration go hand in hand with contextual and aesthetic impact. Right from the start of the process, there has been public involvement in the form of symposia, neighbourhood advisory boards and the official architectural advisory board of the city of Potsdam.
The project is intended to become an attractive hub and meeting place for the entire city and its surrounding area. A new, unique space for urban communication is being created at RAW POTSDAM, with public access to the old railway sheds and a multitude of cultural and exhibition areas. The architectural design been deliberately kept site-specific in order to preserve the unique character. It transforms an undefined central area into a creative, intelligent village. Flexibility of use is the key factor of all programmatic spaces for future adaptations.
An industrial park is to be built on the former Cottbus-Drewitz airfield, with plans for the generation of renewable energy (wind, photovoltaics and hydrogen).
